Conductor of Just1 Hugh Gibbons says welcome - and well done! There are now over 500 Fairtrade Schools in the UK - and thousands of others show their support. It's become a feature of their education in social justice and citizenship. The Fairtrade Foundation Schools team produce marvellous year-round materials for teachers and pupils, and special resources for Fairtrade Fortnight. To supplement this great work from a different direction, I've created Schools Speak Out For Fairtrade. It's a collection of simple and standalone activities on which schools might like to take the lead - as part of their activities for or before Fairtrade Fortnight. They're designed to fit alongside whatever else you do - and be fun with its sleeves rolled up. Each is easy to arrange and run, no- or lo-cost, and packed with opportunities for involvement and imagination. And energy! Speak Out is sort of Springtime companion to the great Schools Sing Out Against Poverty in October. (And you'll see there's an opportunity for schools and congregations to sing the, ahem, Bing Bong Fairtrade Song with Big Ben in support...) The ideas on the right came to mind after browsing the great work being done by all sorts of schools. You'll find each suggestion has some practical information to get you thinking - but most pupils and staff are incomparably inventive! You'll find also how others might help: school governors, PTAs. And on-side clergy, happy to hand over their pulpits to pupils as schools encourage churches renew or sign up their Fairtrade commitments. The
activities are illustrated by a lot of real-life examples of primary and
secondary level schools in action. So you'll see word of voices for
Fairtrade from Cornwall to Scotland - in person, in banners, in delegations.

A schools volunteer
for CAFOD, I was on the working party which steered Portsmouth Catholic
Diocese to become one of the first Fairtrade Dioceses. As you can see, Just1
got Fairtrade status through CAFOD - one of the founders of Fairtrade UK.
